  • card is not valid for e-commerce transactions;

  • cardholder entered wrong CVC code or expiry date;

  • due to temporary issues on the card Issuer side;

  • due to temporary issues on the acquirer bank side.

  • Due to some fraud check defined by the acquirer bank (e.g. Swedbank acquirer case if a customer tried to pay with an inactive card, it might get included in the acquirer bank’s blocked cards/merchants list for 30 calendar days. The card may work for other merchants.)

Customer has 15 minutes to perform 3DS authentication. If the time is exceeded and 3DS authentication is not finalised the payment status is changed from 'Waiting for 3DS' to 'Abandoned'. It is Final status and means failed payment.

The issues during authentication could be that when 3DS authentication window was prompted

  • the customer closed it or pressed Back button, and the payment was not completed;

  • a technical failure occurred usually caused by non-standard 3DS implementation on cardholder (issuer) bank side.
