Understanding Initial and Standing Amounts

The difference between the initial amount and the standing amount in various types of authorisations

Updated over 5 months ago

Pre-authorisation

In pre-authorisation transactions, the standing amount can be lower than the initial amount. This happens when the authorisation is either voided or finalised for a smaller amount than originally authorised.

  • Example: An initial authorisation is made for €10, but the transaction is finalised for €7. In this case, the initial amount is €10 and the standing amount is €7.

Final-authorisation

For final-authorisation transactions, the difference between the initial and standing amounts can appear when a refund has been made before checking the transaction status.

  • If a full refund is processed, the standing amount becomes €0.

  • If a partial refund is processed, the standing amount reflects the remaining balance.

The initial amount always refers to the full amount of the original payment, regardless of any refunds issued.
